Numerous sites will claim that USPS employees work for the federal government, but this is not my opinion.
I’m basing my assertion on a recent incident that occurred, in which President Joe Biden announced that all federal employees would have to be vaccinated (or subject to weekly testing).
Additionally, his executive order mandated that all employers of more than 100 workers must implement a vaccine mandate.
The initial part of his announcement threw even USPS employees themselves into a state of confusion, no one was really sure if they counted as federal employees.
It is clear why. They receive the same benefits that federal employees but work for agencies under the executive branches (the same ones as the president).
However, the Biden administration realized they needed to clarify, so later that day a spokesperson put out a statement:
USPS does not have to be included in an executive order mandating vaccination for Federal employees. USPS has a separate statutory scheme and is traditionally independent of federal personnel actions like this.
According to the spokesperson’s explanation, the “separate Statutory Scheme” refers USPS’s independent governance. It is also separate from U.S. government jobs.
Therefore, USPS employees cannot technically be considered federal employees. But, it is clear that the difference is minimal.
Does the USPS have a good job?
Even though USPS employees technically aren’t federal employees, they are generally considered to be a good job.
Federal employees have the same benefits, including generous insurance and pension plans. Fully covered life insurance is also available.
Employment employees have enough income to support the entire family. Edward Dyer for instance, who is a father of five and has one child at college.
USPS employees get every cent of the benefit and are especially well-paid, even for postal carriers. This particular job may be very physically challenging and potentially even hazardous.
