Safeway has a unique policy. They don’t offer uniforms to their staff in the grocery or pharmacy. They require that all staff adhere to a professional dress code.
Safeway’s dress code stipulates that employees must wear conservatively colored hair and dress in muted colors. Safeway employees can’t have any facial piercings. Tattoos are also not permitted. Other than mustaches facial hair is forbidden.
What are the Safeway Dress Code Standards in Every Department?
Safeway maintains a dress code that is slightly different for every department. However, all employees must adhere to Safeway’s Grooming Standards.
Safeway’s dress code for men and women requires certain grooming standards. So, they have separated their grooming standard list according to gender:
Male employees should have clean, neatly cut hair. They must not color their hair in any way that could distract from work, hinder performance, or pose a danger to safety (ex. The temporary dye can leach from hair into foods. Hands and Nails – Hands must always be clean. Facial hair: Must be kept neat and clean. Employees are not permitted to wear beards, goatees or handlebar mustaches. Only employees are allowed to have regular mustaches. Safeway demands that all male employees maintain decent hygiene. In order to prevent unpleasant breath and body odor, employees are asked to refrain from biting nails, coughing and sneezing into their hands, and other unclean habits. Jewellery must be clean and professional. Neck chains should be worn inside the collar of a shirt in order to prevent a safety hazard. It is not allowed to pierce the skin. Clothing: Your clothing must be properly ironed, pressed and kept in good order.
For Female Employees:
Hair: All female employees must have hair that is conservatively colored. Long haired female employees must keep the color from touching their eyes or contacting any food. When nails are painted or hand-painted, the polish should be either a hard, clear, or semi-glossy color. It is important that fingernail length does not affect job function. Safeway expects all female employees maintain a high standard of personal hygiene. The company asks employees to stop biting nails, coughing or sneezing to their faces and to maintain a clean environment. Jewelry: All facial piercings are prohibited in order to maintain a businesslike appearance. For safety reasons, earrings should be smaller than usual and must be worn within the collar of a shirt.
Safeway workers who are interested in becoming employees can be reminded that Safeway has not changed its dress code since 2008. This means some stores might allow for more personal expression.
However, employees should not show up to Safeway out of the dress code unless they have discussed certain styles with their store manager (ex. piercings, multi-colored hair, etc).
