Americans don’t like to spend more on groceries. This is the most common thing you can do. Just walk into Wegmans and Kroger to purchase one item. We all try our best not to.
Is Aldi Cheaper Than Walmart In 2022?
Aldi does not always sell at a lower price than Walmart. Aldi has outnumber Walmart stores 2-to-1. Walmart recently dropped prices on many Great Value brand items. Aldi sometimes isn’t the best value, though it can be quite a bit more.
Let’s start by breaking down the most commonly purchased grocery items. Then, let’s see what happens when these two meet.
The following is the basic approach I took to keeping it simple.
Both Aldi and Walmart prices can vary slightly based on where they’re located, so for Aldi – who doesn’t list their prices online except in the case of Instacart, which can inflate cost – I used this handy Aldi price list, as well as my own receipts, dated from the last year.
For Walmart, I used the Walmart.com website, with the location – and therefore the prices – set for a small city in the Great Lakes region.
I only compared the most popular items in grocery stores, using each store’s own label when possible and noting any differences where necessary.
When no other option exists, items are compared by price per ounce or pound, or I noted the weight difference.
A final disclaimer. Prices may change at anytime in any location. Although I tried to be accurate, the price listed is only a snapshot and not an official price list.
Aldi is a better choice than Walmart for a majority of the produce prices.
Aldi stores have been criticised by shoppers for not being able to deliver the best produce. However, they receive new deliveries every day and rotate the stock – the oldest product is at the top.
*Note: Tyson was the only brand that had comparable pork loin at Walmart.
Aldi comes out on top in meat prices overall, but Walmart is not as competitive with Aldi for seafood.
*Note: Walmart carries only Thomas brand bagel thicks.
Since Walmart doesn’t carry its own brand of bagel thins, I had to use the Thomas brand as a stand-in. Walmart isn’t as good at comparing to theirs if it made its own brand.
Aldi’s bread is the winner in every category except three.
Aldi’s flavor-infused ice cream can be compared to Walmart’s because Walmart doesn’t make it.
However, this is what they sell that is comparable, and Aldi will save you two whole dollars! These flavors are immensely popular.
Walmart continues to be competitive in the category of pasta and grains. Aldi is even better when it comes instant white rice.
If you are a regular rice eater and have access to a rice cooker, buying a bag of Jasmine Rice from Aldi will save you money in the long-term.
Walmart can help you save money if your family likes Triscuit knockoffs or chips. Aldi, however, is the clear winner in almost every snack category.
Walmart charges less than Aldi for raw honey in one pantry category, but this isn’t surprising considering Aldi’s past as a post WWI grocer that provides the most basic necessities needed to rebuild a nation after a disaster.
Aldi has the lowest prices when you want to buy condiments or oils.
If you’re a regular baker, you have to appreciate Aldi’s ultra-low prices on these essentials.
The most striking item is the 50c baking soda box. This price is 32 cents lower than Walmart’s already affordable prices.
It’s important to bear in mind that dairy prices can fluctuate pretty frequently, but Aldi continuously beats Walmart – except for a one-cent difference on butter.

Aldi may not be as cheap as Walmart but it shouldn’t deter shoppers. Aldi’s per-shopping cart prices will be less if you do not plan to prepare a seafood meal, and you would definitely see an increase in your overall spending over time.
Walmart is still competitive thanks to their Great Value Store brand. You won’t regret making one stop at the Walmart Supercenter if you have other needs – clothes, office supplies and video games.
Aldi’s is Cheaper than Walmart
Aldi, Walmart and Target offer the same store brands but at a fraction of the price. Aldi offers a slightly lower cost than Walmart’s name brand brands. Walmart is slightly more expensive. Walmart packages include five more bags that Aldi. But, it is still cheaper per bag.
