Does Fedex Take Usps? (Returns, Packages, Boxes + More)

FedEx and UPS are all similar, offering comparable rates, a variety of locations, and the ability for delivery from coast to coast.

In fact, FedEx and the United States Postal Service are more than competitors; they’re actually partners, contracted to work together on various services since 2001.

But with this longstanding partnership, does FedEx take USPS? The answer is below.

FedEx will take over USPS by 2022

FedEx, USPS and FedEx do not share shipping duties. However FedEx sometimes handles USPS mailings left unattended. FedEx may hold USPS mail that they can retrieve. The two shippers, however, are not interchangeable and cannot be used as if they are.

  • Are FedEx And USPS Connected?

FedEx and USPS are in a partnership that causes confusion as to whether FedEx accepts USPS.

This partnership was in place in 2001, when FedEx won the contract with USPS that gave the latter access to the former’s domestic and international air fleet.

FedEx also received the ability to use the vast array of Postal Service local delivery services.

What Happens If You Accidentally Put USPS Package In FedEx Dropbox?

FedEx doesn’t have any obligation to USPS. FedEx can deliver USPS-related packages accidentally placed in a FedEx dropbox.

FedEx can deliver packages in anecdotal instances.

    These are some other possibilities:

  • FedEx informs USPS about a package that is meant for their services and holds onto it until someone from USPS can come get it.
  • FedEx may also reach out to customers if there is an account. They could look up contact information for you and notify you of any mix-up.
  • Whatever happens, don’t worry – it is not FedEx practice to just toss out boxes that have found their way to the wrong shipper.

That said, though, you should not treat FedEx and USPS as interchangeable shippers – they most certainly are not.

Can You Make A USPS Return With FedEx?

  • I found an instance from Reddit a few years ago where the company – in this case, 23andMe – actually encouraged the customer to drop off the return USPS box at FedEx!
  • You should be aware that FedEx droppedboxes are not the best place to store your returns. FedEx Smartpost was created back when FedEx Smartpost was developed by USPS.

Smartpost has been discontinued by FedEx as of March 20, 2021. FedEx has rebranded local delivery under FedEx Ground Economy.

That means that even the SmartPost hubs, the packages’ last destinations before being handed over to USPS, are gone.

FedEx will have to return the package to USPS in another way. It’s likely, therefore, that USPS Returns cannot be shipped via FedEx.

Do you have a USPS address that you could use to ship FedEx parcels?

Yes, so long as all vestiges of USPS, like labels and addresses, are removed or covered.

FedEx will treat the USPS package as a FedEx shipment.

SurvivalFreedom.com claims that the answer is “no”. Some anecdotal evidence suggests that it might, but only in very specific circumstances.

But, FedEx won’t deliver USPS-made packages. That is my best guess. While the two share some services, they otherwise operate individually.

It is illegal to place anything in a mailbox located at a residence other than that of the resident or the postal carrier.

FedEx is not likely to have FedEx employees committing federal criminal acts regularly.

Mix-ups can happen, but if you try to treat FedEx and USPS as interchangeable companies, you will end up sorely disappointed.

FedEx Can Deliver A USPS Mark?

FedEx won’t likely deliver packages with USPS labels.

FedEx is an organization with a bottom-line – they won’t make money working for the Postal Service.

The best case scenario would be that FedEx gets the package to USPS. Your recipient may experience some delay.
