While German supermarket chain Aldi has had a foothold in the US since the 1970s, rival grocer Lidl has just staked their claim as of 2017. Lidl, which has its headquarters in Virginia now boasts about 100 stores to Aldi’s 2,200+.
Aldi vs Lidl shares many similarities. They both sell private label goods, have a strong focus on customer savings, and they are close to each other (almost 10,000 Aldi locations and over 11,200 Lidl store worldwide). Also, the Albrecht brothers founded both Aldi (and Lidl)
Although several websites claim Aldi has beaten Lidl when it comes to low prices, I checked out a number of items and found that they were not the truth. I started with produce.
A 12-oz bag of organic kale greens is $2.89 at Aldi; but a slightly smaller bag (10 ounces) was only $2.79, and on sale, it was only $2.29.
Aldi offers three packs of green bell peppers starting at $2.19, while Lidl is selling them for $1.99 per each.
It was quite surprising so I decided to look at pantry staples. Aldi’s 2-lb bag Light Brown Sugar sells at $1.29 and Lidl has the exact same price.
There was a slight difference in the extra virgin olive oils. Aldi’s can sells at 18 cents/ounce. Lidl’s is 22.8 cents.
Pure vanilla extract was another product Aldi beat Lidl on, a more expensive ingredient than sugar and flour. Aldi has two fluid ounces, which sell at $3.25 for Aldi and at Lidl at $3.39.
Although it’s impossible to compare each item at every store, it’s obvious that Aldi could be cheaper than Lidl in certain items. However, Lidl is still competitive all around.
Perhaps one of the greatest discrepancies is between Aldi, Lidl.
Aldi boasts over 2000 stores throughout the US. This includes 37 states and all three coasts. Batavia (Ill.) is homebase.
Lidl, who only expanded stateside starting in 2017, numbers just 100 (with more in the works), and their stores are mainly concentrated on the East coast, with Virginia their HQ.
Aldi maintains 10,000 outlets worldwide, with many of these stores located in Europe, South America and Australia. Lidl tops them with 11,200 stores worldwide, in 32 different countries.
Aldi may have an advantage in the US but it is easily outnumbered by Lidl stores internationally. Lidl has also increased their expansion. By 2021, the company plans to open 50 more stores.
Aldi shoppers who are brand new to Aldi are often impressed with the product’s quality. Aldi lovers who have tried Lidl are also likely to be very impressed, particularly when it comes down to private-label products.
Some reviewers prefer the Lidl quality to Aldi in some instances, stating that the produce was fresher.
This comparison comes as no surprise considering that Aldi’s produce section is often criticized.
Lidl owns its bakery and makes fresh-baked bread. So when we say “fresh-baked” that literally means baked in-store and put out for sale the same day.
Fewer plastic bags on produce. One shop shopper observed that even though there is bagged produce at Lidl there seemed to be less. Another noticed that Lidl’s produce section seemed to be larger.
Lidl stocks bulk nuts Lidl allows you to buy the exact amount you need. Bakers rejoice! For serious snackers, you can purchase bulk quantities and have everything for quite a while.
International food – Lidl carries a surprising selection of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food, like ready-made falafel patties (boxed, too) and bottled tahini, as well as Turkish-style pizza, stuffed cabbage, couscous, and a trio of gelato flavors.
Frozen dinner meals- Aldi isn’t carrying frozen meals in the US. The only thing we want more of, however, are microwaveable meals such as Marie Calendar and Lean Cuisine. They are also available in Lidl which allows for quick and convenient lunches or dinners.
Lidl boasts that it has 80 percent stock from its own private store labels, compared with Aldi’s 90%. But this seems like much less. Lidl really does sell plenty of those trusted, name-brand items, like King’s Hawaiian rolls, Daisy sour cream, Wholly Guacamole, and Green Giant frozen veggies.
Aldi only offers gift cards in the holidays, but Lidl has them all year. Some stores include Gap, Home Depot, Ulta, and yes, Amazon.
Aldi & Lidl also sell different products. However, inside shops you will have a very diverse feeling. Here are some of the major contrasts.
Aldi shoppers need not bring a quarter – It frustrates them more than being late for an Aldi shopping trip and not having enough money. Lidl does not rent out carts, so it isn’t an issue. The best part is that you won’t be stuck carrying around one of the huge men if you need just a couple items. Lidl sells little carts that are half the size of regular ones for easy maneuverability.
Lidls stores can be larger and have more stores! Aldi’s stores measure around 12,000sqft while your typical Lidl measures in at around 20,000sqft.
Aldi has a well-known check-out. Its sitting cashiers are faster than those who sit. Lidl will have cashiers standing.
If the shopper has a slower speed than the cashier, then the cashier can begin scanning next person’s items without worrying about them going missing.
Aldi stores have music playing. Despite being small, some people feel that they don’t have enough. One of the ways Aldi keeps costs down is by not paying anyone anything for the rights to play music in the store.
Lidl is, however, willing to pay to hear some songs so customers will most likely hear the familiar tune while they browse the aisles.
Lidl offers myLidl, which is a program similar to a shopping club. The app can be downloaded for iOS or Android. Shoppers can participate in “games” within the app.
Shoppers who win a game (by spending certain amounts) get a reward like a coupon to save a set amount on their next trip.
Lidl’s app offers coupons for both general use and monthly prizes. Aldi rarely issues coupons.
Shoppers also have the option to purchase groceries using their app. Aldi, in partnership with Instacart, offers mobile grocery ordering.

Aldi, more like German family than their siblings, has many distinct differences from Lidl. Despite having a similar goal, which is to corner the market on affordable staples while providing high-end specialty products, Lidl’s end-goal is different.
Are Aldi and Lidl in America going to be overtaken by Lidl? While it is too early to predict, there will be benefits for customers as these two grocery giants compete in the US.
Which is more expensive, Aldi or Lidl?
Aldi narrowly defeated Lidl (the cheapest supermarket in 2020) to win the title of the cheapest grocery store. However, Lidl was found to be the cheapest supermarket in December, at PS23.29 for a basket of 22 groceries, just beating Aldi where the basket was priced at PS23.64.Jan 19, 2022
